David Bowie - Major Tom

Premier succès de David Bowie auprès du grand public, la chanson Space Oddity (1969) raconte l'histoire d'un jeune astronaute, nommé Major Tom, qui, envoyé dans l'espace, ne souhaite plus reveni sur Terre.
Cette chanson, connu presque par tous, présente un des personnages recurrents dans la saga artistique de Bowie, à côté de Ziggy ou du Thin White Duke. Cette chanson fait référence évidemment aux primiers hommes qui sont allés dans l'espace (le single est soti le jour où Armstrong a mis un pied sur la lune), mais surtout à la découvete de la drogue et de son pouvoir d'évasion et d'inspiration artistique. L'autre référence, plus œdipienne, est celle de l'émancipation, qui sera confirmé par la chanson "Ashes to ashes", 10 ans plus tard.

David Bowie - Ashes to Ashes

Quelle chanson magique! On dirait qu'Eno et Robert Fripp ont participé à ce morceau mais il n'en est rien; c'est Chuck Hammer qui a trouvé ce son, entre synthé et guitare. Toutefois, la composition de ce titre resulte bien de près de 3 années de collaboration avec eux.
Après avoir enterré depuis longtemps Ziggy Stardust, voici que Bowie fait un petit retour vers son fameux Major Tom de ses débuts, pour faire le point sur ces 10 années de star-system, années durant lesquelles il a été au-delà de toutes ses espérances en matière de succés, mais aussi en déchéance, avec ses consommations de drogue. Ce morceau rend aussi hommage à l'une des personnes qu'il a le plus marqué dans sa vie: le plus grand junkie de tous les temps, l'un des plus grand écrivain de notre temps: William Burroughs.
